Frequently Asked Questions

About the tradition of choosing directions, and how to use this tool.

Choosing a favorable direction is an old Chinese practice. The Book of Changes pairs directions with the eight trigrams; later compasses divided them into twenty-four mountains, each tied to specific affairs. Travel, moving house, marriage, and building were all preceded by checking directions — the Grand Duke's position and the year's inauspicious sectors each carried their own taboos.

A traditional compass must first align to magnetic north and mark precise degrees — it is an instrument for surveying land and orienting buildings. This tool does not survey geography. It faces you, the person asking: when a matter needs direction, it answers the question "which way, from where you stand, favors you now", based on traditional number lore.

Direction is only one of three factors — timing, place, and human harmony. As the classics put it, the virtuous find joy in mountains and the wise in water: real fortune begins with a steady heart and steady conduct. Treat the direction as a gentle reference before acting — neither superstition nor dismissal. The road, after all, is walked by you.

Same principle as drawing lots. The old maxim says repeated asking shows a divided heart — and a divided heart gets no answer. If you already have a direction and nothing has changed, there is no need to ask again.

Still your mind for a moment before divining, and frame the matter clearly — career, travel, a meeting: one matter, one reading. If you have no clear question yet, start with the BaZi Calculator to know your own chart first. Results are for entertainment reference only.
