Frequently Asked Questions

BaZi (八字), also known as Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese metaphysical system that analyzes a person's birth date and time to reveal personality traits, life patterns, and timing of key events. It uses two sets of characters — Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — to construct four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour), each representing a dimension of your life. Unlike Western astrology's zodiac signs, BaZi provides a highly individualized reading because it's based on your exact birth moment — not just the month or season. Generate your free BaZi chart →

Most students can grasp the core concepts (Five Elements, Ten Gods, chart structure) in about 10–20 hours of focused study. This free 6-chapter course covers the entire foundation. You'll be able to identify your Day Master, read basic chart patterns, and find your Favorable Element after completing it. Advanced skills like Luck Cycle (Da Yun) analysis and detailed career reading come with practice and continued study.

Yes. This course is specifically designed for self-learners. After completing all six chapters, you'll be able to analyze your own chart for career tendencies, relationship patterns, and favorable elements. Many BaZi practitioners are self-taught. A professional reading can provide deeper insights or catch things you might overlook, but the core skills are absolutely learnable on your own.

BaZi and Western astrology both use birth timing, but they work differently. Western astrology relies on planetary positions and zodiac signs, giving everyone born in the same month a similar reading. BaZi uses the Chinese calendar (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) mapped to your exact birth year, month, day, and hour — making it far more individualized. Two people born on the same day but different hours will have completely different BaZi charts. BaZi also focuses heavily on practical life applications (career, marriage timing, wealth patterns) rather than personality descriptions. Explore more on our blog →

Your exact birth time determines the fourth pillar (Hour Pillar), which is important for detailed readings — especially regarding career, children, and later-life patterns. However, you can still get a meaningful reading with just the year, month, and day (three pillars). Many people who don't know their exact birth time can narrow it down through life-event retrospection — a technique practitioners use to reverse-engineer the missing hour pillar. You can also start by generating a free BaZi chart with your known information.

The Ten Gods are ten relationship categories derived from how the other elements in your chart interact with your Day Master (the stem of your day pillar). They include Resource (印, mentors and knowledge), Output (食伤, creativity and expression), Wealth (财, income and resources), Power (官杀, authority and career), and Companions (比劫, peers and competition). Each category splits into a direct (zheng) and indirect (pian) variant depending on yin-yang polarity, giving ten relationships total. The Ten Gods are covered in detail in Chapter 1 of this course and form the core analytical framework for interpreting any BaZi chart.

What You Can Do After This Course

After completing all six chapters, you'll be able to look at any BaZi chart and identify the core strengths, challenges, and life patterns encoded in it. Specifically, you'll learn to read the Four Pillars and map the Five Elements to understand how they interact within any chart. You'll be able to spot career patterns — whether someone is naturally suited for government work, entrepreneurship, corporate roles, or high-risk ventures — directly from the arrangement of Ten Gods in their chart.

You'll understand how 10-year Major Luck Cycles (Da Yun) and annual influences shape the timing of key life events, including career shifts, marriage, and periods of heightened opportunity or risk. You'll also learn to identify relationship signals — marriage timing, compatibility indicators, and common patterns that affect partnership dynamics.

Beyond prediction, this course teaches you how to find your favorable element — the single most practical takeaway from BaZi — and use it for daily decisions about colors, directions, and timing. You'll gain foundational skills in health-awareness reading, personality assessment, and risk-period identification that form the basis for deeper study or professional practice.
