Ch 2: First Readings — Career & Relationships

Apply what you learned in Chapter 1 to answer the two questions everyone asks first: "What career suits me?" and "What does my chart say about my relationships?"

2.1 Government & Public Service Careers

Getting a government job requires more than just a good chart — you also need favorable Luck Cycles and Annual Influences. But certain chart patterns consistently show a natural affinity for institutional work. Here are the most reliable indicators:

a) Power-Resource Mutual Generation（Guan Yin Xiang Sheng 官印相生）

The Power star (Officer/Killings) produces the Resource star, which then produces the Day Master. The chain must be complete and unbroken: no Output stars interfering. The Day Master should be slightly weak — if it's too strong, receiving more support is wasteful. The Power star shouldn't overwhelm the Resource — if Killings are too strong and Resource too weak, the Resource can't fully transform the Power into usable energy.

b) Combining with Power Stars

When the Day Master combines with a Power star — especially Jia or Bing (considered the "noble" combinations) — it shows a strong pull toward public service. The combination represents what the Day Master is pursuing.

c) Output Release（Shi Shang Xie Xiu 食伤泄秀）

A strong Day Master with Output stars releasing its excess energy generates nobility. The key condition: Output must not be suppressed by Resource. When Output flows freely, it produces exceptional talent and cultural achievement.

d) Controlling Power（Zhi Guan Sha 制官杀）

"Control Power, gain Power; control Killings, gain authority." This is the most direct path to real power — and usually involves actual management or military roles. The methods include: clashing, piercing, tomb-imprisoning, or faction warfare. Once established, the person wields genuine authority.

e) Hurting Officer with Resource（Shang Guan Pei Yin 伤官配印）

A slightly weak Day Master with Resource star supporting it, while the Hurting Officer star provides talent and creativity. Both stars must coexist without damaging each other. This combination produces capable people with both practical ability and creative talent.

f) Imagery Method（Xiang Fa 象法）

This approach ignores strength/weakness and patterns entirely — it reads the chart as a picture. The core question: does the chart present a harmonious image or a fragmented one? Look for specific formations like "Officer wearing Resource's hat," "Wealth wearing Officer's hat," "Wealth commanding Killings," or "Output commanding Killings/Wealth tomb." Each formation paints a picture of the person's career nature.

2.2 Entrepreneurship & Business

If government work isn't in the cards, wealth creation through business is the next path. Here are the chart patterns that indicate entrepreneurial potential:

a) Internal Output Pattern（Nei Shi Shen Ge 内食神格）

A strong Day Master with the Output star rooted in the Earthly Branches (not just floating in the Heavenly Stems). The Output must not be suppressed. This is one of the strongest business indicators — the person has internal drive and creative energy to build something from scratch.

b) Output Produces Wealth

When Output and Wealth are both in the Day and Hour pillars, the person is naturally entrepreneurial. But the specific arrangement matters:

c) Killings as Wealth

When Killings/Officer stars are incompletely controlled, they can be read as Wealth — but at a much higher magnitude than regular Wealth, because Power is the source of Wealth. Controlling Power means controlling Wealth's source. This type is naturally drawn to bold ventures and high-risk business.

d) Output as Wealth

Output stars treated as Wealth carry more magnitude than actual Wealth stars. If the Output is stored in a tomb, the wealth potential is enormous — minimum startup at the million-dollar level. The method of "obtaining" this wealth is primarily through clashes and piercings.

2.3 Employment & Skilled Work

Most people fall into this category — and it's not a negative assessment. With one or two favorable Luck Cycles, even "ordinary" charts can achieve significant success. Never give up.

a) Output Produces Wealth (Year/Month arrangement)

Year/Month Output produces Year/Month Wealth — the standard private company employee. This person has a specific skill and earns a living through technical expertise.

b) Companion Controlling Wealth

The method of obtaining wealth is crude — using raw physical strength or direct competition rather than skill or strategy. This often indicates manual labor or physically demanding work.

c) Prosperity Star（Lu 禄）as Wealth

Using your Lu (the branch where your Day Stem reaches its "official" stage) to seek wealth. This person thrives with Resource support but suffers from clashes, piercings, breaks, and tomb-imprisonment. With Resource: a comfortable life. Without Resource: hard-earned money. If Companion stars appear at the Heavenly Stems, they'll split your wealth — like having to share your salary.

2.4 High-Risk Finance

Indirect Wealth as the Useful God: This requires a strong Day Master with strong Wealth — strong enough to handle it. The method of obtaining wealth is primarily through clashes and piercings (maximum gain), secondarily combinations (substantial gain, 合), and least through direct control (still decent). These people are naturally suited for high-risk ventures — stocks, speculative investments, borderline opportunities.

2.5 Marriage — Marrying Well

For a woman to marry a capable (wealthy or powerful) husband, the chart typically shows: the Power star is present and has useful work to do, it combines harmoniously with the Day Master, and they don't damage each other. When the Spouse Star（配偶星）is hidden inside a tomb（墓）and the tomb never opens, marriage is delayed — sometimes significantly. The key event is the Luck Cycle or Annual Influence that opens the tomb: that's when the Spouse Star emerges and marriage becomes possible.
